Information from HKDR: 2013/09/06/thurs-5th-sept leptospirosis-makes-an-unwelcome-return I think it’s true to say that there is never a time at Acorn that I don’t meet either an ex-HKDR dog or one of our fosters. Today there was poodle (cross) Copper, as well as two Westies that had been adopted a few years ago. I mention this because they both have leptospirosis, and there have been several other cases recently. I remarked to Dr Andy that it had seemed to be a good year for the disease, meaning that I hadn’t heard about any outbreak during the summer, and he replied that it was this time last year when it was really bad. There has already been at least one death, so please pay attention and don’t let your dogs swim or even paddle in the rock pools from the Peak down to Pokfulam, the area that seems to be worst affected every year. It’s not worth the risk even if the dogs love to splash and play in the water on hot days. Beaches are a safe alternative, even if they’re harder to get to. Also pay attention if your dogs seems to be even a bit off-colour, and check gums for any sign of jaundice.
