Information sent on behalf of Cambridgeshire Constabulary Pick Pocketing - City Centre Your local policing team would like to draw your attention to a recent rise in pick pocketing offences in the City Centre and immediate vicinity. The most vulnerable victim group has been identified as the elderly. By following some of the simple advice and steps given below this should reduce your risk and ensure that you stay safe when out and about in Peterborough. Always ensure that any handbag use choose can be fully sealed. Carry your bag close to you, either across the body or under your shoulder with the zip facing forwards. Ensure that you only take the minimum number of plastic cards and money with you that you require for the day. Never keep your PIN number with your purse/wallet. PIN’s are easy to change to a number you could remember, just ask your bank to help if you need it. Do not allow yourself to be distracted at a cash machine, ensure that you are aware of who is around you when using a machine and ensure that your cash withdrawal has been put away safely . Try to keep jewellery to a minimum. Try to avoid getting into a conversation with someone that you don’t know, you never know what their motives might be. Never give to anyone who asks you for money. If you feel you would like to do something to help, give to a local charity instead. Gentleman are also targets. Flirtatious or overly familiar females, who often work in pairs will attempt to distract you whilst relieving you of your wallet. When sat in either coffee shops or on public benches do not put your bag on the empty seat next to you, or worse on the floor. Consider the use of a purse cable with will attach your purse to the inside of your handbag or a purse bell which will alert you to any attempt to remove your purse. These can be purchased quite cheaply from many on-line suppliers such as Amazon. The Police want you to enjoy your shopping and leisure experiences in the City Centre but please stay alert at all times and be aware of others around you. Protecting yourself is the best way to ensure you and your possessions stay safe. Thank you Beverley Makin Crime Reduction Officer - Eastern Sector
