Inglewood Announces New Solar Intelligent Waste & Recycling Collection Units New units to be placed in 5 locations throughout city Inglewood Mayor James Butts and the Inglewood City Council have announced the roll out of five Big Belly Solar Intelligent Waste & Recycling Collection Units. The units are solar-powered trash compactors and companion recycling units with wireless notification technology used to collect trash and recyclables in public spaces. The units will be placed at the following locations: • Northeast corner of Manchester Blvd. and Crenshaw Blvd. • Southwest corner of La Brea Ave. and Manchester Blvd. • Southeast corner of Centinela Ave. and La Brea Ave. • Northeast corner of La Brea Ave. and Century Blvd. • Southwest corner of Crenshaw Blvd. and Century Blvd. “With cities pressed by spending cuts and a desire to promote environmental friendly policies and practices, Inglewood is proud to roll out these high-tech waste and recycle collection units,” said Inglewood Mayor James Butts. “These units not only promote an effective innovative way to keep our city clean, but to efficiently collect waste and recyclables in our public spaces.” The units have two sections including a trash compactor and an accompanying recycling unit. The design of the unit helps to facilitate separation of trash from the recyclables. The trash compactor uses solar energy to compact trash and when the 32-gallon bin reaches a certain level, an internal electric beam triggers the motor to compact the trash making room for more trash. The units can be remotely monitored enabling the City to send out collection personnel only when units are full. “With the growing concern by Inglewood residents over orphan trash and debris expressed especially near the Food4Less and 99-Cent Only Store shopping center on Crenshaw and Century Boulevards, we’re proud to do our part to help keep Inglewood clean and green,” added Fourth District Councilmember Ralph Franklin.
