Ingrid purchased the moon on a quiet and rainy Saturday afternoon. She’d picked up the sales section of the local paper and noticed right off that Night Sky Lighting was having its annual sale. She’d quickly applied a little powder to her cheeks, slipped into her green rain goat, donned her shiny black galoshes and was off down the road for a look at what she hoped would be a good buy. Her decision to make this purchase had not been an idle one. She’d spent many a silent evening, stockinged feet on a cross stitched cushion before the fire, considering how her friend, Mr. Many-Drawers, might feel about such a gift. She didn’t want him thinking her forward or even presumptuous. Mr. Many-Drawers had shared with her, over their many cups of tea, how Jimmy Jack his best friend and housemate, despised the audacity with which outsiders purchased gifts for their home. Jimmy Jack often spent months, once even a year, deciding on what kind of picture to purchase or which lamp might best offset the end table on which it stood. One time, in an effort to jump start a stalled conversation with his visiting sister, Jimmy Jack had mentioned, in an offhand way that the Dragon Fly was his favorite of the garden insects. Two weeks after his sister’s departure, Jimmy Jack was greeted at the front door buy a UPS delivery person holding an enormous box. Unwrapping it, Jimmy Jack found a five foot tall, three food wide, iron replica of a Dragon Fly. To prove the waste of breath his sharing had been, one could now open the garden shed and find a plethora of Dragon Flies in every image imaginable. There were bird feeders, bird baths, wall mountings of every size and configuration, Dragon Flies in plaster, copper, glued to wires for hanging, stuck on stakes and some with hooks. It was all too much, this invasion, by way of decorating, in to the dense sense of privacy Jimmy Jack desired to maintain for himself and Mr. Many-Drawers. With these thoughts in mind, Ingrid found herself entering the doorway of Night Sky Lighting and in to the warm and ebullient embrace of Nicholas Torch, the owner . . . (tbc)
