Input, Process, Output, Outcome In management, we have control - TopicsExpress

Input, Process, Output, Outcome In management, we have control over the first two, and little control over the latter two. Yet most people seems to think we can expect output and outcome without exerting enough effort on the first two. Without planning & good management of input and process, expecting good output and outcomes is just plain daydreaming. On the other hand, there are others who are so focussed on correctness of inputs and process, they lose sight of output and outcomes. They become fanatics of procedural correctness and tiny details to the detriment of the bigger picture. What is the difference between output and outcome? Output is the result of a process; it is normally quantitive. Outcome is normally qualitive & is a state of affairs. Outcome is achieved when a certain desired level of output is achieved. Output is not the same as outcome. Hence managing input, process, output and outcomes are actually managing 4 different variables. They are not the same.
