Inside Birminghams network of Cold War bunkers and tunnels which would have kept city running in the event of a nuclear strike It was a time when nuclear war in Britain looked like it was becoming a frightening possibility. With tensions increasing between the US and Russia and the Suez Canal crises brewing in Egypt people in Britain in 1953 were becoming more and more nervous about the prospect of a new war. As fears of war grew, work begun in Birmingham on a subterranean network of Cold War bunkers strong enough to withstand a nuclear blast. Now, one of the men who helped to build the labyrinth of tunnels has spoken about the construction of the bunkers more than 60 years ago. Patrick Coyne, now aged 80, worked for four years on the tunnels which criss-cross underneath the city and which would have kept the area running in the event of a nuclear strike. Originally from Galway, Ireland, Mr Coyne moved to Birmingham in search of work, little dreaming that he would one day end up as an engineer in the city’s most top secret location. He has now spoken for the first time about his memories of building the tunnels.
