Inside the Civil War Journals of Margaret Nichol Vaulx: The Battle of Franklin was fought on November 30, 1864, at Franklin, TN. It would prove to be one of the worst disasters of the war for the Confederate Army. Confederate Lt. General John Bell Hoods Army of Tennessee conducted numerous frontal assaults against fortified positions occupied by the Union forces under Maj. General John M. Schofield. Hood was unable to break through or to prevent Schofield from making a planned, orderly withdrawal to Nashville. During the month of December, the Vaulx family would find themselves changing homes for safety reasons no less than five times. Each time the family moved, the battle would come to them. This brings to memory the Wilmer McLean family, who in order to escape the war, left their Manassas, Va. home after the First Battle of Bull Run, only to have the war come home to their doorstep at Appomattox. Sissie is Maggie’s sister Catherine Clement Vaulx 1847-1931. Home, Thursday December 1st 1864. I rose this morning late. All the troops from Columbia and Franklin (Schofields and Woods corps) are now here. Many think there will be a fight and others that they will go to Kentucky. The negroes became so frightened they all left, but I think it was all a premeditated thing. Sissie and I got supper and succeeded very well this being our first attempt. From all accounts there must have been desperate fighting at Franklin. I understand all our neighbors have left, but I hope Pa will let us remain as I feel confident God will protect us if we put our confidence in Him and do our duty. Attachments: Maggie, John M.
