Insights into the recording of “The Warrior’s Prayer” By Ruxia Sandru After recording “The Warrior’s Prayer” for the upcoming Kings Of Metal MMXIV album, MANOWAR’s bassist and producer Joey DeMaio and world acclaimed actor, writer and explorer BRIAN BLESSED offered valuable and exciting insight into the venture of the day. How do story telling & acting connect and come together in “The Warrior’s Prayer”? Joey DeMaio gladly elaborates on these forms of art: “Before the radio, and television and newspapers all the things we know about society were told to somebody and somebody wrote it down. People used to gather around the campfire and listen to some person telling the story. Then somebody else would tell another story and they would entertain each other this way, cause that’s all they had. It is now a lost art, of course. But somehow, acting and storytelling, are one and the same, that’s how acting must have developed; one must have done better than somebody else at acting out a story.” Brian Blessed emphasizes: “Telling this story to a little boy, is rediscovering a lost art.” Then, the worldwide celebrated actor directs flow of conversation towards his relating with the metal scene: “I love the sounds, I love the vibes, it’s something original, and the performers appear to me to be musical explorers.” As for the collaboration with the kings of metal itself he adds: “I love music and I’m taking this as a great adventure.” Having had the privilege to listen to one of Brian Blessed’s studio takes, I can tell his interaction with the story is incredible. The man really lives up to his fame, showing he is not in vain often named “a jewel in the crown of acting”. He submerges himself completely into the tale, abandoning himself into the realm of the heroes and war gods, granting the story goose bumping sonority, through the use of one instrument alone: the depth and resonance of his voice! Although the musician and the actor only met on the day of the recordings, they seem to have clicked instantly, and connect with each other in the blink of an eye, as friends often do. Through the grace of the patrons of arts, things couldn’t have gone any better according to Brian Blessed: “We met only today, but Joey was a great guide to me, he directed me wonderfully, and he would not take second best.” MANOWAR’s bassist returns the compliment: “It was all very smooth, not at all one of those take after take, and then all cut and paste situations. There was a very natural flow to it.” Joey DeMaio says: “It was a magnificent spectacle that will bring the story of “The Warrior’s Prayer” to life in the listener’s mind. Just wait until all the sounds and all the effects will be in place, that will just take everything to a whole new dimension.” “There’s a part of me that’s a warrior, and I also have a love of heroes.” says Brian Blessed. “And this script’s got all of that in it; it’s imaginative, vibrant, epic, full of sensitivity and full of vision! And it’s got also a prayer, it calls out to the Gods of War and there’s something beatific about it”! +++ Follow MANOWAR on facebook/manowar for more news about “The Warrior’s Prayer” and “Kings Of Metal MMXIV”.
