Inspiration of the day, from my friend Steve Chandler: The London Sunday Times says Nassim Nicholas Taleb is now the hottest thinker in the world. His books Fooled By Randomness, The Black Swan and Antifragile are challenging intellectual delights...the kind you enjoy dipping into over and over again. To illustrate his central idea in Antifragile, Taleb uses the metaphor of the wind. Think of the wind as everything that happens in life-everything that blows your way. The wind represents the unpredictable world we all live in. If you are a candle, you are fragile to the wind. It blows in and you are devastated. You go out. I know people who are continually devastated by what happens to them. Candles. (Sometimes known as victims.) But there is another way to be. I used to think and say, But there is another kind of person, but it is actually a way to be. A way available to all of us. And that is what Taleb calls a forest fire. If you are a forest fire, the wind fuels your growth. The wind makes you more dynamic and stronger. You feed off of anything that comes your way. It grows you. It strengthens you. It encourages you. Forest fire is a way you can be. It lives at the level of being, not doing.
