Inspirată de o postare recentă de pe La Blouse Roumaine, Maria Elena Sandovici a scris un text remarcabil despre dor, diaspora și de ce stau românii la cozi în Europa să voteze. Merită împărtășit tuturor! You might remember me talking about dor before. Its one of my favorite words, not only because it is untranslatable, and not just because it expresses a fundamentally human, heartfelt longing in the most Romanian way possible. You could say this is the most Romanian word of all, because it exists as such in no other language. Dor is a type of longing, a feeling at the heart of other feelings, something that can encompass emotions ranging from homesickness to unrequited (or even requited) love. Maybe dor is a sort of love, love for things and people you miss, though paradoxically one can experience dor without being estranged. It does not have to be a sad emotion, either, though it is undoubtedly a powerful one. So, what do you get when you mix Romanian dor with social media? You get such massive turnout from an active, well connected diaspora that embassies the world over had trouble accommodating the expats who showed up to vote in last Sundays first round of the Romanian presidential election, and people ended up queuing for hours, and even being turned away. The role of social media here, is twofold: Not only did it, by keeping them informed more than ever before, provide a strong incentive for Romanians living abroad to vote, it also helped the diaspora in their predicament of being kept waiting, then being turned away when the polls closed, to immediately react to this situation. Images of the lines outside embassies instantly went viral. The diaspora is now more visible than ever. They are in newsfeeds and on Twitter timelines the world over. More connected than ever, Romanians, whether living abroad or in Romania, can communicate instantly, and support each other. The shares, the likes, the hashtags, formed a circle of dor.
