Inspired by my profile picture, my upcoming one woman show & Andre Ignacio Dimapilis .... I wrote this today: Lola Encar, Because of You With your eyes closed and your warm hands signaling in the sky, you motion to your invisible friends to come toward you with Tagalog greetings. I tell you, “Lola, I don’t speak Tagalog, speak English please.” This pains me that I never learned your dialect or the language of my ancestors. It pains me that your hearing is fading and what was once a simple conversation with you has turned to a game of telephone with 400 whispers of misunderstanding and jumble words between us. So that my answers twist and turn in your ears to nonsense. Lola Encar: Did you eat yet? Nicole: Yes. I had breakfast already. Lola Encar: You ran fast with Betty? Nicole: No, Lola. I ate already. Lola Encar: Who’s Betty? Nicole (laughs): No, Lola. I ALREADY ATE! Lola Encar (laughs): Oh. That’s good. We always seem to find each other at the end…through laughter and song. We forget the words and just sink ourselves to the music and lyrics of Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole. You sway in your bed and smile and hum along to the familiarity of your favorite American crooners. You turn toward me and say, “This is nice.” My heart melts and fills up simultaneously. And I know I could live in this moment forever. Yes, Lola….This is nice. Thank you.
