Installation & Site-Specific Featured artist - Alina D Alva Duchrow Tunis, Tunisia alinadalva Alina DAlva Duchrows work consists of taking risks - risk to meet the other without a frame or pre-defined idea. The starting point of her creative process is to let herself be affected by the world, be this a place, a person or an event, and allow a poetic form emerge from this affection. Process is an important part of her work, integral to any consideration of a final product is to empty herself of ideas but to allow herself the encounter. Whispering walls is a sound installation held in the town of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia, within the public art event “De Colline en Colline” sponsored by the Goethe Institute in Tunisia and developed in partnership with the Tunisian artist Raffa Bacha. Sidi Bou Said is a town in northern Tunisia located about 20 km from the capital, Tunis. The entire town is located on top of a steep cliff, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. The town got its name from a Sufi who lived there in the 12th century and establishes a sanctuary. The Marabout was a Muslim religious leader and teacher in the Maghreb, but this term also refer to a tomb of a venerated saint, and such places have become holy centres and places of pious reflection in Tunisia. In the past the Marabout functioned as a space of encounter, not only with the spiritual dimension, but with the other, the human. A place for exchange, for listening, for learning. In this context Alina d’Alva created in the tomb of Sidi Aziz a sound installation, where the audience could listen to rare stories told by the residents of Sidi Bou Said;all revolving around the theme of Saints.Recorded, edited and transmitted simultaneously by invisible loudspeakers installed behind the walls of the Mausoleum, they caused a great buzz. To hear the stories clearly, one needed to approach the ear closely to the partly perforated wall, like listening a whispered secret. The Marabou space functioned as a place of encounter with the invisible life of Sidi Bou Said. A place where the voices of the residents were amplified. A portal of simultaneity that allowed access to something that was hidden to the sense of who hurried passed. ALINA DALVA DUCHROW attained a BA Fine Art from the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences, Alfter, Germany (2008) before going on to receive an MA Fine Art from the same Institution in 2011.
