Instead of meditation today, try some anti-meditation. Recognize that you need do nothing. Take this literally and be completely lazy in your mind. Close your eyes and simply be. Do not have an agenda. Do not try to relax. Do not try to manage your thoughts, to stop them or analyze them or release them or control them. Do not try to breathe in a special way or to slow the breathing down. Do not think that youre supposed to be doing something in particular. Do not resist anything. Let go of all of your efforts and controls and mental actions. Do this simply by stopping `doing` all the things you thought you should be doing. You do not need to replace your efforting with anything else, or take an action in order to stop things. Do not try to do anything at all. Every time you notice any amount of efforting, trying, controlling, managing, or thinking that you should be doing something, stop it - but stop it with no fanfare or control or effort. Stop trying. Stop trying to stop trying. Stop trying to make your breath do somersaults. Stop trying to control thinking or slow things down or take a special vantage point. Stop trying to stop trying to do things. This can become quite subtle, as you are so used to DOING, and so used to controlling. Ultimately, the purpose of this is to recognize that your ego self, which thinks it is special and must always be actively controlling things, needs to let go of control. There isnt really a way for it to DO this... it has to stop DOING entirely.. which is a surrendering that doesnt involve any action, any effort, any trying or any change. What your thoughts are doing is not important. What your breathing is doing is not important. That you are trying to do anything at all is the problem. Stop trying so hard. It may seem that not trying is impossible. The ego doesnt know how to not do, to not act, to not control, to not interfere. And there isnt anything it can do to stop doing this. But who you are is not the ego and you can simply cease to try making anything happen. Even you should cease trying to not make anything happen - that too is trying. Be vigilant for the subtle nuances of trying to control. Remind yourself simply and calmly you dont need to do anything. Let everything be. Let yourself be.
