Insurance and medical billing confuse me. Not long ago I had to go - TopicsExpress

Insurance and medical billing confuse me. Not long ago I had to go to the ER. Had insurance and paid my ER visit co-pay at the time before receiving treatment. No surgery, no transfusions, didnt even see a MD. I saw a nurse practitioner, they ran tests on almost every fluid in my body, took my vitals, no MRI but did do a single pass catscan. The bill totaled over $15,000. Wasnt itemized either. Insurance paid a negotiated $2,168, I was billed $1,504 for my part and they adjusted away right at $12,000 ! Ummmm, wow. I dont understand 15K to begin with much less a 12K adjustment. Was it really over-priced by $12.000? Or is it billed so high just to get $2168 from the insurance company? falsely pushed high to get a smidgen of cash from insurance and thus my percentage is also boosted accordingly, and then once insurance pays, they discount the 12,000? If I had no insurance would the $12,000 remain? Something is seriously wrong with our system.
