Integrated Freshwater Ecosystems Management, Kigali, Rwanda. From 17 – 19 December 2013, The Abertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) organized a training of trainers in Integrated Freshwater Ecosystems Management (IFEM) to build the capacity of practitioners from the great lakes region in skills they need to become full-fledged freshwater managers equipped with state-of-the-art knowledge and skills to help them drive the development and sustainable management of freshwater resources for the good of biodiversity and communities. The training was organized in the framework of the project “Stakeholders Engagement for Informed Decision-Making, Threats Mitigation and Sustainable Freshwater Services Management in the Great Lakes Region of East and Central Africa” that ARCOS is implementing in partnership with Lake Tanganyika Authority, Nile Basin Discourse, Ramsar Centre for East Africa and with funding support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The topics that were covered in this training include Integrated Water Resources Management, Freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem services, climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as community development. At the end of the training, participants committed to form a vibrant community of alumni and agreed on various initiatives to be undertaken to enhance and put to use the knowledge that have been acquired. Nature Palace Foundation presented on initiatives that assist communities mitigate and adapt to climate change.
