Intellectual property story. Yall know my Music Publishing company APR Music Publishing, right? Yall know the logo and image I have been using to as the company image. Well the photo I just scarfed off the web. I just figured it was public domain. Well yesterday I received a cease and desist email from the owner of the picture. The letter basically said remove the picture or pay a $50.00 licensing fee. At first I was going to just find another image. The more I thought about it the more I realized that I like the image, but more importantly I realized that me using the image without permission was no different than someone using one of my songs without my permission. So I paid the $50.00. Making a buck in the music business has never been a cakewalk now more than ever especially if you are a songwriter. I realized we all should practice what we preach. Respect all the intellectual property out there, give credit where credit is due, pay your licensing fees, support your performing rights organizations and fight to give songwriters fair compensation for the awesome work they do. Thats it, nuff said... Happy hump day one and all...
