Interactors at Work! MULLET BAY – On February 23rd, 1905, one of the world’s first service clubs, the Rotary Club of Chicago was formed. Today, hundreds of Rotary Clubs are located across the globe. Minors and teenagers ranging from 7 to 17 years old have also been added to the family in their own groups, Early-Act Clubs and Interact Clubs respectively. On Saturday, February 22nd, 2014, despite the early morning sunlight, 91 active volunteers came out to the Mullet Bay Beach to observe Rotary’s 109th Anniversary. The two largest and most active Interact Clubs on Sint Maarten organized a beach cleanup rather professionally in a short span of time. Their “service-above-self” act was to perform the very first coalition project in a Beach Cleanup without the help of parental organizations. The Interact Clubs of Learning Unlimited and Saint Dominic High School are proud to acknowledge the participation of Rotary Mid-Isle, Early-Act Members, AISM’s new Youth Wing, and of course, the Interact clubs’ very own members in assisting the neglected needs of our island. The two presidents, Siddharth Jethwani and Ruhan Jay Bora of the Interact Club of SDHS and the Interact Club of LU, respectively, divided the 91 members among groups of five. The areas of concern were then pointed out to the various groups and a total of twenty-four large garbage bags were collected, filled with trash, along with other bizarre articles such as lampposts and wheelbarrows. With the commendable level of group efforts, all garbage was gathered at the base spot, and the presidents stayed back until a truck came to collect all of the trash. The cleanup lasted roughly three hours, from 7 A.M. to 10 A.M. The two clubs also treated the participants with foods and drinks before, during, and after the cleanup. With all due respect to other fellow Rotary Clubs and their subdivisions on the island, the Interact Clubs of Saint Dominic High and Learning Unlimited would like to wish Rotary a gracious and prosperous birthday. “We will continue to make the world a better place through action, not words.” – Interact Club of St. Dominic High School President Siddharth Jethwani.
