Interested vs Committed... Several years ago a small group of friends asked me to help them with their growing business... to grow it to the next level. They were doing ok, but it wasnt great. Things were moving slooowwwly. From the first meeting I could tell that the business had potential to be a million dollar business. If things are done correctly and they were focusing on the right things, their business could escalate very easily. The thing is most people dont realise their potential because they dont know what they dont know. They dont know what they were missing to get the results they want. But from my experience as a strategist and helping so many other businesses, I knew immediately what elements were missing and what they need to do to explode their business to the next level. Side note: Most people think that its just one missing thing. Its a myth! Usually its a few different things working together to create a synergistic impact. So they asked me to be part of their business as an advisor and they would give me equity in the business. I often get offers like that. Many times even from businesses that were already doing well and want to grow even more. And contrary to what most people think, I decline most of the offers except for a few. Heres why: I dont only look at the business potential. Equally important, if not more, I consider the people Im going to work with. Because... 1) from past experience, once Im involved in something, usually I get involved passionately and spend a lot more time than just the agreed allocated advisory time. Cos Im just passionate about building businesses and making things happen. 2) I want to work with people who are really committed to make things happen and have similar values like mine. Ive learned from personal experience and from observing many other partnerships that without similar values, sooner or later, things will just fall apart... even when the business is growing. So I asked them several questions to get a better idea of the people Ill be working with. From their answers I could immediately tell that they were not congruent within the group. ALL of them said they were interested in growing the business. They were excited to get to the next level and they were ready to do what it took to bring it to the next level... But only a couple were really COMMITTED to do it. Let me say this again: Talk is cheap. Its easy to say Im interested to get this and this results. Ive seen so many people say things like that all the time. Declaring to the world to make themselves more accountable. Many years later they were still stuck where they were... no longer declaring... instead giving excuses of why things didnt go the way they wanted (aka. blame others and shift responsibilities). Seriously. Ive seen so many of them. I remember a lady who wanted to achieve a 6-figure sales in a few months. But she didnt do what her coaches (not my workshop) asked her to do. She disappeared. She didnt even complete payment for her coaching. A months passed, she posted some photos of her in another motivational program, declaring motivational, inspiring stuffs. Heard she didnt do well again. Disappeared again. Popped up in another motivational seminar a few months later. Another guy, wanted to attend my underground (exclusive members-only) workshop. Every time he would asked about it. Every time he would backed down at the last minute. Those who had attended had gotten amazing results. But today, he is still stuck where he was... and still limited by non-committal. Many such stories... anyways, back to the group of entrepreneurs: When I sensed that only a couple were really COMMITTED while others were just INTERESTED and paying lip service / just in love with the idea of success but not willing to pay the price for it, I decided to decline. Honestly it was a little hard for me as I was attracted to the potential of the business. But I knew from enough past experience that interested will always lead to trouble... so I bit my tongue, declined nicely and wished them the best. In less than a year, I was sadly proven right, yet again... Their business grew a little. But the group broke up. Those who were just interested... lost interest. Theyre now interested in something else. They came up with reasons (read: excuses)why its not gonna work for them and why theyre now focusing on something else. Mannn... they barely scratched the surface of the potential of the business. But they found their reasons (read: EXCUSES!) to support their views. And of course, its logical... to them... to justify their views. The couple of committed entrepreneurs left behind stuck together and continued to grow the business. Like what Kenneth Blanchard said: “There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.” Interest is weak. Its non-committal. Its a ready-made excuse for the foreseen failure. Its a subconscious cover-backside mechanism. Thats why I do my best to avoid working with people who are interested. Committed. Passionate. Put-things-on-the-line type of people on the others hand... :) They usually have great attitude and work ethics and dont take no for an answer. Obviously I love working with them and helping them grow. Thats why, even for my workshops I look forward to attract those people who are committed. People who put-it-on-the-line through actions. People who dont just talk but do. People who apply what they learn... because when they do, theyll get EXPLOSIVE RESULTS. There is no doubt. The system, strategies and tactics that I teach work.
