Interesting HR Facts : @ What is the best colour to wear for an interview ? Did you know that the best colour to wear when going for an interview is blue? Colour psychologists believe that blue indicates that you are trustworthy, and it also tends to be most people’s favourite colour. Grey is also a safe colour as it gives an element of formality, and trustworthiness too. Both colours are perfect for an interview in a corporate environment. Black is regarded as authoritative, and brown and dark green are both ok, but you can be seen as a bit “alternative” if you wear a suit in that colour. It all depends upon the culture and the environment that you are looking to work in. @ What is the best colour to wear for a disciplinary? Research has shown that wearing green is the best colour for a disciplinary, as the colour is supposed to have a calming effect on the situation and the people! The worst colour to wear is red, as the colour is very linked to our emotions, and can subliminally affect the people concerned. @ What is the best time of the day to have an interview ? The best time of day to be interviewed, is at the beginning or the end of the day. Interviewers will always remember the first and last people they interviewed, and if you are scheduled for around lunchtime, you will have to work extra hard to keep the interviewer’s attention on you! @ How long do I have to make a good first impression at interview ? According to research, most interviewers will have made up their mind on your suitability for a job within 3 minutes of you walking through the door! Bear in mind, that by this time, you will only have had the personal greetings and possibly your first question asked by this stage. This just shows how important it is to create a good first impression. In advance of the interview, make sure you; rehearse your greeting and small talk , think about displaying open and friendly body language, practice a firm handshake and remember to smile. No-one wants to hire a grump! @ What is the best time to ask for a payrise ? The best time of day to ask your boss for a payrise is first thing in the morning. Always avoid times when they are hungry or about to leave the office, as you will never grab their attention for very long! The same advice can be extended for asking your boss about anything from holiday requests to a discussion about future promotion in the firm. @ What %age of time should a manager talk in an appraisal for ? The split should be 80/20 with the employee talking 80% of the time. The manager should not dominate the content of the discussion, merely guide it, and give the appropriate feedback, as this is the employees chance to speak. The same can be said for recruitment interviews, and performance management meetings. The emphasis should be on the individual doing the bulk of the talking. In recruitment, this percentage is important for informing the employer about what the individual can do. For performance management meetings, this is because the manager needs the information, and also by the person recounting and discussing their performance, it usually enables them to see the error of their ways. @ How can you tell if someone is lying to u ? Everybody leaks body language, so when they are saying one thing, their body may be saying something completely different. When someone lies, they usually display the following actions: prolonged eye contact, a rub of the nose, fidgety body movements, anxious or very repressed arm and hand movements and they will speak slower but firmly. @ How can you tell if you are winning in an interview ? Look out for the body language as you answer each question. Interview panels are very rarely like poker players, and will express themselves unwittingly. If you see some frowns, pursed lips, grimaces, false smiles, and the panel aren’t connecting with your gaze and looking down at your notes a lot, then you should know you are onto a losing streak. Conversely, if you have laughter, vigorous nodding, lots of note taking, lots of friendly eye contact, and they mirror your words and body movements, then you are on to a winning streak. #Aarti_Sharma
