Interesting. My image of extraterrestrials is people from other planets who have had this planet under observation since life first developed here, because they know how rare viable biospheres are, and how important biodiversity is to life overall, so they watch, take samples for conservation, and wait for the dominate intelligent species (us) to mature compassion to acceptable levels and attain interstellar travel, at which point they will probably invite us to join the intergalactic community. I see it this way because if they actually were malevolent we would be stew already. But I do understand Neils point, half of our population is cruel, selfish and completely lacking in empathy, so of course that is what they expect from others.
