Interesting. So, the framing is a bit over the top from my perspective, but the -idea- it presents is one I find really compelling. Much of modern police activity today exists for the purpose of generating municipal revenue, disproportionately off the backs of the poor. Thats a serious issue. Between that and the -insanity- that is the Drug War, along with broken windows style low level harassment of the poor for being poor, you end up with a situation where most of the work police actually -do- is harmful to society, rather than in service of it. I still remain uncertain that society would be better off with -no- policing. I think that a power vacuum would occur, and just be filled by a different gang or gang. And police are a gang that at least nominally has some sort of vague oversight. Yes, its shitty, and recent events have brought too light just how weak and inadequate that oversight is, and cast doubt on whether effective oversight is even -possible- within the framework of policing we have today, but I still dont think that replacing them with classic-style organized crime is better. Need to work out a third option somehow. But regardless, it seems that cutting way back on what policing police do would be an -incredible- boon to society. We could also pay what police remain somewhat better, train them -far- better, and have a stronger system of censure, to get rid of bad cops much, much easier. That job should be a high privilege that only those who prove themselves capable can keep. Another option, we could also possibly replace a lot of cops with -unarmed- response teams of trained arbitrators, people without power to arrest, whos role is to come in and help people work out problems and help them negotiate the system in terms of redress of grievances.
