Interesting analysis of how a handful of blogs like Wings Over Scotland, Bella Caledonia, National Collective etc have become the main sources of generally pro-indie political commentary on the coming Scottish independence referendum (all the traditional news & TV media apart from The Herald have tended to back continued union with UK...). Its presumably one of the sources of the apparent unionist insult cybernat, but I think such insults miss the point somewhat, i.e that theres a digital revolution taking place in media generally. The new players that are emerging are not necessarily the digital versions of print & TV based old-media, but wholly new companies and voices. This is happening everywhere in the world, but the process is being accelerated in media markets which feel they are not being served by existing media, such as supporters of Scottish independence. Ive also experienced a similar thing in China. Chinas state-run English language media come with all the compromises youd expect, and foreign media like Guardian & NYT often seem to cater to overseas readers with no first-hand knowledge of China, so the various independent China-based English-language blogs have become indispensible parts of the news & current affairs diet for the million or so foreigners based here. Any stigma or whiff of amatuerism that the word blog may previously have had has gone - become a valid source for editorial commentary and opinion pieces.
