Interesting cinematography discussion with Rodney Charters Dan Chung Bill Bennett and Geoff Boyle. I kind of wish I had been sitting on this panel, so I could have offered a slightly different point of view ;) Its funny because I remember siting with Dan and Rodney over drinks in Vegas in 2010 and having pretty much this exact same conversation. It seems like a bit of a false choice to me to say that choosing resolution over dynamic range and color is a mistake, since this is not really a choice that anyone is faced with. Most of the cameras with the best dynamic range today, for example, are already 4K+ resolution, including Phantom Flex 4K, Red Dragon 6K, and presumably the Arri 65mm 6.5K camera. There is no reason to choose between resolution and dynamic range. You can have both. All other things being equal, why would someone choose to shoot their cherished project on 2K resolution when we know with absolutely certainty that 4K displays will eventually be the standard? Boyle made an extremely valid point about the fact that the people who are resisting 4K post today are literally using the exact same reasonings and logic as those who resisted 1080p or 2K post five or ten years ago. I do think there is a very strong case to be made in the other direction, however. For many years I have given the opinion that shooting serious films on 1080p or 2K resolutions is a big mistake. A few years from now, when everything is being viewed on beautiful 4K screens, there will be no going back to upres films that were acquired at 2K or below. Those films will never, ever play at native resolution on a 4K screen, ever. This was my point five years ago, and I believe it even more strongly today. https://vimeo/106153701
