Interesting discussion about the rise of Greeces Coalition of the Radical Left or Syriza and the upcoming Greek elections. There is understandably a lot of triumphalist praise coming from sections of the U.S. progressive movement and the left. But without critical debate and discussion, the optimism of today will lead to the cynicism of tomorrow. Among many questions for me are 1) Can progressive or left-wing governments in Europe or elsewhere create thorough-going social change without a super-majority in government?; 2) Can progressive or left-wing governments in Europe deepen democracy and advance emancipatory politics as part of the European Union project (meaning without fiscal or monetary autonomy); 3) What is the role of successful left-wing political movements in Europe in supporting international solidarity with social and labor left around the world?
