Interesting discussion over at a friends Facebook wall. Somebody asked: would we have better governance if we could replace everyone in government? Id like to share my thoughts because Ive asked this question myself so many times in the wee hours of the morning. Better governance is not just about government doing a better job. Better governance is how well the government interacts with the people and vice versa. Ergo, replacing everyone in government (though my gosh sometimes that sounds like a beautiful dream), will not give us better governance if the people will stay apathetic or will not care enough to engage in a productive and effective way. (Besides, Ive covered enough government offices as a journalist and served in government for a short while to know that there are patriotic and honest people in the bureaucracy. Gems and treasures who give everything to serve the nation). Now, revolution seems to be a great way to spark change (short cut, similar to spanking children) but then again, while Filipinos seem to have patented people power, after more than 20 years, where are we now? The real revolution is not going out on the streets and calling for change in government. The real revolution lies in each of us...in the daily acts of integrity and rejection of mediocrity and servant leadership. The decision to get a ticket instead of bribing a traffic officer...choosing messy consultations rather than ramming policy down peoples throats. So many seemingly tiny defining points of decision...It will take awhile...and Filipinos, well, we are always in a hurry. Thats not necessarily a bad thing especially if you see the suffering of the poor. They cant afford to wait for good shelter or hot meals or a good education. We are in a hurry because we care..I hope. No, the biggest enemy is not apathy. Its losing hope and giving up.
