Interesting, in all the noise of the street, Jesus turns to the blind man, the beggar that others have tried to shut up for asking for mercy. The blind man had more insight than many others, although he had not met Jesus, he had listened and thought through the stories he had heard about Jesus and made his own mind up. Jesus has been been given a hard and disrespectful time by others, does not have disrespect from this man, who has recognised who Jesus truly was and is, ‘Jesus, son of David’ (the King and Messiah, the promise made by God). No one had opened the eyes of the blind before; but we find an intriguing nugget of information in Isaiah 35: Be strong, do not fear. Behold your God will come…then the eyes of the blind shall be opened!” The opening of the eyes of the blind is for God alone and the people knew this… As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.’ He called out, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Lord, I want to see,’ he replied. Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.’ (Luke 18:35-42) Prayer for the Day 22nd November 2014 O Lord Jesus Christ, as man you knew the weakness of our nature and the power of temptation, but overcame all things by the grace of God: so breathe into our hearts the strength of your Spirit and clothe us with heavenly armour, that we may conquer all that wars against our souls and be kept your faithful soldiers and servants until the end.
