Interesting morning on our beach at Kingsbarns. As we came back up to the car park, we spotted a rather interesting figure standing at the top of the steps. He was dressed in a a morning suit and was wearing a grey top hat. In one hand he had a glass of champagne, in the other a Gandalf-like staff... clenched between his teeth was the end of a well-chewed cigar. We eased past him and then spotted his carriage and team of four Friesian horses. It was then that we realised that this was more than just an overdressed eccentric. Turns out it was Herbert Vollrath Kohler Jr who owns the Old Course Hotel and the Hamilton Grand Hotel in St Andrews... as well as about $5-billion worth of companies including the Kohler brand of bathroom equipment. Seemed like a nice chap who was happy to pass the time of day with a man who was bringing his kids for a day at the beach. Ill give Herb this... he know how to travel in style...
