No matter the result of the negotiations, a deal for Time Warner Cable involving Charter seems likely, given the determination of John Malone, whose Liberty Media is Charters biggest shareholder. Meanwhile, shares were up for Charter and Time Warner Cable, as well as Comcast, on news of the potential bid. Additionally: The possibility that Time Warner Cable might be acquired by one of its top rivals is part of the cable industrys attempt to shore up its most important asset -- the pipes that deliver broadband -- as it sees its core video customer base begin to slip away. However, cable faces a major challenge in delivering fast Internet, as its network-based technology means the more users and devices that log on, the slower the delivery of content, according to Alexis Caffrey. Cable is strangling itself with its own wires, Caffrey writes.
