Interesting piece by Astra Taylor. The basic idea is that in a society completely dominated by market fundamentalist/corporate capitalist ideology, the notion of selling out is meaningless. And, Taylor suggests, thats the fact of the matter: discussions with 20 somethings indicate that the term selling out in their lexicon applies exclusively to e.g. a sold out event or product. The other meaning, which is to say, the possibility that one could choose a career, life philosophy or an aesthetic direction based on anything other than its potential to generate income isnt so much rejected as it is regarded as an impossibility thats simply not worth thinking about. In this connection, it strikes me that a lot of music criticism from not very long ago now seems very dated in that it doesnt recognize this really profound transformation of the relationship of individuals generally (and artists and musicians in particular) to the society which we are attempting to survive within. theguardian/commentisfree/2014/apr/11/millennials-student-loan-debt-selling-out
