More importantly I hope that this epidemic has shown to all of us, how weak our health systems are and I hope our leaders will take heed and fulfill their commitment to spend at least 15% of their GDP on health care as they promised in Abuja in 2001 (only one country has tried to meet that target, Gambia spends 5%). If we think that healthcare is as important as we say it is in international conferences or donor meetings, then our budgetary expenditures should reflect that priority. Meanwhile, our benevolent president donates $500,000 (20 million dalasis) to Sierra Leone, which could have been used to spearhead a nationwide sensitization campaign that could save Gambian lives.
