Interesting policy idea floating around the government arena– forcing Australian University graduates who work overseas to pay their HECS. The current system provides a loophole whereby graduates do not need to pay back their loans, if they are living overseas. The UK and NZ already have such measures in place. According to Bruce Chapman (architect of the HECs scheme), “it could save the budget $80 million a year” and “bring in $177 million in extra revenue over two years”. This is a compelling and formidable solution to the alleged budgetary/fiscal problems the current government constantly lament. Thoughts?
