Interesting read. The core idea is that ignoring comments may be good for you, and this article was cited in a story of today that the Popular Science website is electing to disable comments on its stories because the negative tome generated by trolls detracts from the message they are trying to convey. I bet that many other sites will follow suit. A conclusion of the article was that it is the negative emotion of the responses people remember the most, that it takes far gereater discipline than most people have to stop and think about issues in an objective and dispassionate way, and that people are vulnerable to negative emotions, which they carry arround for a longer tine. I wonder about the motivation of trolls, who are overwealming male. I wonder if it their own real powerlessness that motivates them to attack others and to spread negativity. They may a smug elitism as cover for their lack of real success at understanding the world and doing something constructive in their lives. I think that they want to damage the motivation of others by being nasty and negative because spreading goom, getting predictable response from people gives them the illusion of control and lets off the hook to have to understadnd and think, they can stay in their shell. motherjones/environment/2013/01/you-idiot-course-trolls-comments-make-you-believe-science-less
