Interesting snippet from our Curator for Australia Day: Only seven horses landed with the First Fleet in 1788; two stallions and five mares. Of these only a couple were to live more than a few years. The horses were for the military officers to ride. Convicts and guards walked, and convicts were the beasts of burden to move heavy objects. Push carts were used up until the 1800s. Bullock drays were introduced in the 1790s, but the first passenger carts do not seem to have been introduced until the late 1790s.
