Interesting study from Sweden shows that a 12-lead EKG and a faster test for the cardiac enzyme troponin is very effective at ruling out MI and avoiding unnecessary hospital admission. Of the 9,000 patients sent home from the ED on the basis of these tests, only 15 suffered an MI within the next month, and none of them died. The blood test is not yet available in the US, but presumably will be approved before too long. [Small world note: The cardiologist quoted at the end of the piece -- Dr. Allan Jaffe -- was my cardiology expert in a med mal case about a million years ago.]
