Interesting visit to the 150th anniversary of the St. Albans Raid. In the heart of Yankee territory (Vermont) I chatted with a Confederate officer who gave me an impassioned talk on the Southern viewpoint of the war. He wasnt talking as his character, this was the gentleman himself. In the hour we (he did all the talking) spent, we covered only the events in an around Fort Sumter. He told me the armed invasion force Lincoln was sending down the South Carolina, and that he and his cabinet conspired to let the fort come under Confederate fire so as to give all the North the the proof that the South fired first. They then made up the cause of slavery to give their aggressive actions against the South the ring of a noble cause. I could have come away thinking that Lincoln was the worst president we ever had, and that he was nothing short of a dictator, ruthlessly persecuting any in the North who opposed the war because he knew that he could not be impeached. Not saying I agree with him, but it goes to show that anyone can make a plausible-sounding argument for their cause if they throw enough facts at you. It certainly was not the education I was looking for in talking to someone who eats and drinks the Civil War. Oh yeah, it was not by definition a Civil War as defined by Julius Caesar.
