Interestingly, and I can only guess at why this might be the case, skill, technique whatever you want to call it is particularly liked by young men - a massive generalisation but there is something in this. I have often speculated on this observation and journeyed further to consider whether this might be why electric guitar is taught using either rock or funk guitar styles as the basis for teaching. Clearly guitarists improve playing these styles but they also benefit from the subliminal message that the concept technical musician and rock guitar are some how synonymously linked. It must be noted that very few girls choose to play electric guitar , certainly true in music college, or bass guitar for that matter, or drums? Interestingly acoustic guitar is not controlled so fiercely and notable that many more girls play acoustic instruments? It is plausible , I think that technique is a barrier, or rather particular constructs around the idea of technique are male in orientation. depressingly I run out of hands when I try to count the number of times I have heard technique on musical instruments analogously linked to football , car engines and so on.
