Interlude while we await final result: Im missing former KKE - TopicsExpress

Interlude while we await final result: Im missing former KKE general secretary Aleka Papariga. She was so quotable. In explaining the KKEs line a few years back against professional sports (yes - that was the line), she was asked by a party member about Soviet athletes, who must surely be an exception. No, she calmly explained (she sort of has the manner of your eccentric, but very working class, aunt). You see, if you end up competing with the professional, specialist athletes of the west then - and we Marxists understand this scientifically - the process of competition means you internalise the social relations of the professional, capitalist monopolists. So it not that it is not desirable, it is that Soviet sports in the professional sphere could not avoid this importation of alien class forces. Im from memory. But every word and inflexion is etched on my brain. I mean - how often is it that you hear an orthodox Communist leader fluently explaining in an understandable way Tony Cliffs theory of bureaucratic state capitalism by reference not to ballistic missiles but to asymmetric bars and water polo? Irreplaceable.
