International Holocaust Remembrance Day , Georgia On 27 January 2014 , at the Conference Hall of Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel in Tbilisi was held event dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day .The event was organized by Tolerance Center at Public Defender of Georgia and International Foundation “LEA”. The event is supported by Advancing National Integration (ANI) project of the United Nations Association of Georgia (UNAG) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). At this event there were : The meeting and Memorial ceremony of candle lighting. At the meeting there were slide photos /exhibition of prisoners of Auschwitz Birkenau , ( on based photos “Yad va shem”, Jerusalem) and slide-exhibition of Graphic Art work of Ms. Marine Solomonishvili on themes “holocaust with eyes of art”. 27th of January was announced as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005. On this day in 1945 the largest Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz Birkenau in Poland was liberated. On the occasion of this date , participants of the event commemorated the victims of the Holocaust minute of silence. At the Memorial ceremony were present and spoke : Mr. George Margvelashvili , President of Georgia ; Mr. Ucha Nanuashvili ,Public Defender of Georgia ; H.E. Mr. Niels Scott UNDP Georgia Resident Representative to Georgia; Mr. Boris Iarochevitch, Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union to Georgia; Marine Solomonishvili ,President of International Foundation “LEA” ; Mrs. Sanda Fuchs, wife H.E. Yuval Fuchs , Ambassador of Israel to Georgia; Mr. David Zohar, American Jewish committee -JDC representative in Georgia; Ms. Mr.Beka Mindiashvili ,Head of Tolerance Center at Public Defender of Georgia. Speakers lit candles to honour the memory of 6 million Jews, 2 million Gypsies (Roma and Sinti) ,other victims of Nazi regime and “Righteous Among the Nations” , (hibry: “חסיד אומות העולם”), people of different nations who rescued Jews from the Nazis ,“He who saved one life - save the world”. ( On 2013 in “Yad va shem”, museum in Jerusalem is 24 811 people of different countries and nationalities who rescued Jews from the Nazis ). Rabbi Avishai Batashvili , Sephardic Synagogue of Georgia, read a memorial prayer. In deference to the President of Georgia , Mr. George Margvelashvili , Mrs. Marine Solomonishvili gave the book Jewish Communty in Georgia illustrated his Graphic art work. During the memorial ceremony, the participants spoke that during any conflicts are particularly vulnerable, women and children, espesially of ethnic minorities receive double discrimination. Among the 6 million Jews of the Holocaust , 3 million were women and 1.5 million were children. On this annual day of commemoration International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the UN urges every member state to honor the victims of the Nazi era The Path to Nazi Genocide , It is intended to provoke reflection and discussion about the role of ordinary people, institutions, and nations between 1918 and 1945. Participants said future priorities in the field of prevention Anti Semitism and any form discrimination protection in world countries is to promote Holocaust education . Holocaust is a permanent reminder for the humanity that even a little intolerance can reach the edge of destruction of human family. Holocaust is an everlasting reminder for all of us to actively combat Anti Semitism, intolerance toward racial, ethnic, religious, or any other forms. Representatives of diplomatic corps, state institutions, Georgian Civil Society and Jewish community representatives, members of the Councils of Religions and National Minorities under the Public Defender of Georgia and Georgian TV/ Mass Media was attend the event.
