International Human Rights Day opened by Dutch Ambassador Gajus Scheltema Supported by the Dutch Embassy, Amnesty International Hungary organised on 10 December International Human Rights Day at Gödör Club, a culturally and politically active hub in Budapest. In his opening speech, the Ambassador recalled the aims of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights and put emphasis on the notion of ”Human Rights 365”, which encompasses the idea that every day is Human Rights Day. He emphasized that the Netherlands sees the respect for human rights not only as a moral and legal obligation, but as a tool to promote a more stable and prosperous world, which is in the Netherlands’ best interests and should be in the interest of all States around the globe. He noted that in addition to the State’s responsibility to ensure respect for human rights, the civil society sector has a major role in promoting human rights standards. Ambassador Scheltema recalled the support provided by the Embassy in the past few years to a variety of events and programmes related to the promotion of human rights and strengthening the civil society sector, such as the VERZIO international human rights documentary film festival, the Budapest Pride Festival, the building of an international creative art project on peace and justice for secondary school students, the development of educational material on Anne Frank, and cultural events related to the Holocaust. He specifically mentioned some NGOs, with which the Embassy has already cooperated, for example, the Transparency International in the fight against corruption, the Rainbow Mission in promoting LGBT rights, and Amnesty International in organising Human Rights Day related events.
