#International #Kite #Festival - #Photo #Contest When someone tells you to Go Fly a Kite in #Gujarat, don’t be surprised they actually mean it. And in January, that means sharing the sky with thousands of kites (Yes! We wrote it correct- it is thousands of kites in the sky). From dawn to dusk, people of all ages fly kites- Kites of all colours, shapes and sizes are flown and the fun-loving rivalry is to battle nearby kite-flyers to cut their strings and bring down their kites. To be around during this festival is to feel the heart and pulse of Gujarat and its people. On a night prior to the festival special markets are held where these kites and especially skilled manjas (kite’s string) are sold. Special mixtures of glue and ground glass cover the lines with which the kites are flown. They are dried and rolled onto reels known as firkees. Unless used carefully the strings are sharp enough to cut a finger. No matter what your background or beliefs, if you are in Gujarat in January, you will no doubt find yourself flying kites with everyone else. Interestingly, the festival draws expert kite-makers and flyers not only from cities of India but also from around the world. When: Wednesday, 14th January, 2015 Where: Celebrated across Gujarat, with major centers of kite-flying in #Surat, #Vadodara, #Rajkot, etc. The International Kite Festival is held in #Sabarmati River Front, #Ahmedabad. #Photo #Entries #Contest: If in case you have any photos clicked during the Kite Festival (irrespective of the year), share it with us.
