International Tutors Did you know? Leonardo Da Vinci is a name synonymous with genius and mystery. Many artists renewed the Da Vinci’s myth into their creations (for example, Salvador Dali and Marcel Duchamp). One of the Leonardo Da Vinci’s most famous paintings – The Last Supper – was used to form Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code. But it’s surprising when our students don’t know history has been “rearranged” for fictional purposes! Some “real” information about this painting: The Last Supper was painted in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. Leonardo did not love the fresco thus decided to use a mixed technique borrowing elements from panel painting. The combination of technical choice and location (the refectory) resulted in an early deterioration of the painting. Nevertheless The Last Supper survived many accidents: goofy restoration attempts, the French anticlerical revolutionary troops of the 1796 and a bombing in the WWII (15 August 1943). Thank goodness it is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage List! Fly there and visit it. But before doing that, why not come to International Tutors for a class in Art History or learn about the importance of the Renaissance in one of our History seminars.
