Internship in Burma: Dear Mr Wooley: Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) is an exile Burmese media group based in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. It was nominated for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, recognising its investigative journalism work during the Saffron Revolution in 2007 and in exposing a nuclear pact between the Burmese military and Pyongyang. In addition to TV, we have Burmese and English websites - small dedicated teams which work to provide the most in-depth but balanced news coverage of issues and events in Burma [Myanmar]. We are independent and owe no allegiance to governments, cronies or large investors. DVB English website has run a series of two- and three-month internships for nearly two years. It is our aim to recruit the best and brightest from English-speaking journalism schools and immerse them in a vibrant newsroom atmosphere from Day One. Those accepted for a work experience at DVB will be tasked with reporting, copy-editing, proofreading, narrating, and other daily tasks common to a news room. We do provide a small stipend (US$300) to help with living expenses, but cannot unfortunately cover foreign air fares. As a small tight family, we at DVB always help to settle in any newcomer while at the same time ensure they are never short of true journalistic work. We are now looking ahead to 2015 - a general election year in Burma and potentially a pivotal and exciting era. We will be accepting applicants for an internship (for either two months or three month terms) throughout the year. Applicants may specify which dates are preferable. We are ideally looking for someone hungry, independent, hardworking and resourceful. A background in journalism studies is a must; a knowledge of Burmese/ Southeast Asian affairs a bonus. Applicants should send a cover letter with a CV to: [email protected] and [email protected]. If you believe this is something that may interest your students, let me know and i can put together a small pack of additional information including testimonies, photos, from our previous interns.
