Interpretivism Many students, these days, choose interpretive paradigm as their main vehicle for data analysis and interpretation. However, most of them take it lightly as "Descriptive" and think that describing the data will do. That is not always true. Here are some concepts to understand "interpretive paradigm". 1. Social interaction is based upon three basic ideas a. Consciousness (about ourselves and relationship to others) b. Action (choices about how to behave in different situations) and c. Unpredictability (human behavior can not be predicted, thus different in different context) 2. "Meaning" is the main crux for interpretivist. Social world consists of and constructed through meanings. 3. Subjectivity: We give meaning by the way we behave. "We create and recreate a sense of social system on a daily basis, minute by minute, piece by piece.." 4. Interpreting the data from the point of view of the informants. 5. Facts can be established, but they are context-bound (not applicable even for different people in the same situation) 6. Knowledge is always relative 7. Mostly data are collected through unstructured interviews and participant observation.
