Interstellar - No Spoiler Review Set in a near future, the Earth is suffering devastating famine and climate change has created a dry world that is battered by massive regular dust storms. The only crop that will grow is corn and the population has now become one that seeks to just exist, not to develop. Matthew McConaughey plays Coop, an ex NASA pilot who now farms corn for a living, he lives with his father in law Donald, played by John Lithgow and his 2 children, Murph his daughter and her elder brother Tom. Murph is straight from Coops mold and revels in stories that her father tells of exploration of the stars and planets. Tom is more grounded and looks to follow his father and carry on farming his land. After Murph discovers a strange anomoly occuring in her bedroom, Coop decodes a message that leads him and Murph to a secret NASA base where he discovers a group of scientists that are working to find a new home for the Human Race. With pilot experience, Coop becomes part of a team that will leave our know Galaxy through a wormhole that leads to new stars and Planets that will hopefully be able to sustain life and create a new beginning for all of us. I went to watch Interstellar at the Cineworld in Telford due to the fact they have IMAX and Im glad I did. This is a film that is a grand visual spectacle, the images as we travel through space are not quite as good as what you get in Gravity, but this isnt the same type of film and doesnt need the same majesty. What Interstellar does is show us things that we dont really know what they actually look like, but you truly believe that you are looking at and travelling through a wormhole, you do believe that you are skipping along the edge of a Black Hole! Interstellar deals with a lot of complex theoretical physics and Im glad I watch The Big Bang Theory and anything that Brian Cox presents, because it definitely comes in handy with regards to grasping at some of the science that you have to try and get to your head around. Its not completely necessary to understand these things to enjoy the film, but it helps! Interstellar benefits beautifully from an amazing score, that does remind you very much of of Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey, but this is the only comparison I would make to the classic. When broken down in individual components, Insterstellar isnt Nolans best work, in my opinion, and neither is it the best the work of the main actors, McConaughey, Hathaway, Caine and Lithgow. Stand out performance, probably goes to Mackenzie Foy, who plays the young Murph who struggles to let her Father leave on this mission that may mean her never seeing him again. Saying that Interstellar isnt Nolans best, doesnt mean you shouldnt go and see it, it is a wonderful piece of film making, and deals with issues that affect us all, form the Global problems with the way we are devastating our own Planet, to the relationships that we have with our own families and crushing decisions that we sometimes have to make when we think we have no other choice. Ultimately, Interstellar is a sumptuous feast for the eyes and will spark massive debate on its storyline, but I dont think it will be breaking any awards records. 4 out 5 Cowardly Astronauts!
