Interstellar - Theres been a lot said about this film, a lot of it - TopicsExpress

Interstellar - Theres been a lot said about this film, a lot of it is very positive, personally I found more negatives in the film. Firstly, it didnt help that there was a trailer for the re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey beforehand, because Interstellar owes so much to 2001 but is only a shadow of it. I spent the whole time thinking Id really liked to be watching 2001 right now The film has some very beautiful imagery in it, it also has some very plain, uninspiring imagery in it. It does get the scale of things right, and there are some great scenes, but the film (as with some of Nolans previous work) relies too much on coincidence and convenience to get through challenging situations. Its not as smart and intelligent as some have claimed it to be, it is just a dumb blockbuster disguised as an intellectual fare. The science in the film will be nothing knew to people familiar with films such as Planet Of The Apes, Event Horizon, etc. It does feel like its a greatest hits album of some of the best sic-fi films of the last 40 years (Contact, Sunshine, Silent Running,) and on top of that, theres also a dash of M. Night Shyamalan thrown into the mix (which is no longer a good thing) People have thrown the word ambitious around quite a lot when discussing the movie, but it is also a mess. It suffers from some bad writing, editing and scoring. You evoke great films of the past at your peril, and when youre evoking 2001 as much as Interstellar does, you can only ever fail. As for the actors, almost every character in underdeveloped and uninteresting; some of them just get completely forgotten about. Everyone from McConaughey to Hathaway to Chastain do an okay job, but no one stands out because they actually have so little to work with. The success of this movie is in the visuals in space, the failure of this movie is with the Human characters (the robots work very well) and with everything that takes place on Earth. I cant go into too much more detail without potential spoilers, but something happens about half way through that just makes you roll your eyes with disbelief, for 2 reasons, neither of which I can discuss without spoiling the film. I must admit, I feel about Nolan the same way I feel about Adrian Lyne, I like and admire him as a film maker, despite the fact that I have never really liked any of his films that much and so my advice when it comes to Interstellar is wait a few weeks for the 2001 re-release and watch that instead, this is not worth the hype. https://youtube/watch?v=Lm8p5rlrSkY
