Interstellar (2014) DISCLAIMER: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS! If I could sum up Interstellar with one phrase it would have to be An emotional thrill-ride. I loved almost every minute of it. Right from the get-go, it had me involved and enjoying it. Part of this was the beautiful camera work and cinematography. The scene at the start, where they are driving through the corn field and Hans Zimmers fantastic score starts playing, really clicked with me. I gasped (which almost never happens in cinema with me) and my mouth must have stayed open for at least 10 seconds. The cast is phenomenal, with Mackenzie Foy as Murph being better than 90% of child actors I have ever seen. Matthew McConaughey as Cooper and and Anne Hathaway as Brand were fantastic and their relationship was so dynamic. Their relationship and the extent to which Cooper will go to save her and his family is what, amongst tons of other things, sets this movie apart. It really would not be the same without it. Further, Michael Caines portrayal of Professor Brand was incredible and I could not help but shed a tear as he began to die, despite what he had done.. Thats another thing, every choice made by every character in this movie I could understand. I hated nobody in this film. Nolan was incredible in that he made me, in the 169 minute run-time, know the characters so well that I could understand why they had made the decisions they made, even if they were not the best ones possible at the time. The score was, as you could expect, was perfection. I have no gripes calling Hans Zimmer a genius. He consistently rolls out high quality scores and musical numbers. However, saying that, Interstellars theme could be up there in my 20 favorite movie scores of all time, undoubtedly. The penultimate scene, where Cooper is in the space-time room place was thought provoking and, much like with Memento, something that I was forced to think about again and again in the theater until I understood it. Through this film, Christopher Nolan has reminded me of why he is such a good storyteller. He has shown he understands raw emotion and the naked nature of the human condition. This film made me feel something that I have never felt in the theater before. Watching this was almost sightly spiritual. A stunning film and one that I will undoubtedly see again sometime soon.. 9.5/10
