Interview of HK artist Annie Wan Lai-kuen about her works in the current exhibition. KWG: What is your pursuit in art? Annie: I think it is reflected in the process of my art creation. I use ceramic and the molding technique to make my artwork. The material I choose and the molding technique does not limit my art creation but it creates a wider platform for me to extend my vision in art making and to show my concept. Using ceramics and molding technique allows be to express my idea freely and without restrictions. KWG: Why books become one of the themes in your art creation? Annie: Before every molding process in ceramic art making, an object has to be selected. Then firing is done. There will be a difference in the form of the finished object compared with the original one. It makes me curious about the relationship between the text and the forms and their differences. Through the firing, the pages disintegrate leaving behind hollow form that suspends the book in time. This makes me wonder when book does not contain text and takes on a new form, what is this object now? KWG: In the current show ‘Lodge of Tranquility’ in Karin Weber Gallery, what do you think your work can bring for the show? Annie: My work reflecst in different ways, bringing different insights. I hope my ceramic books can bring a feeling of silence and emptiness to the audience, after all, the books are disappeared from the firing process, and it leaves behind an empty ceramic form. The ceramic books now belong to the realm of memories, and we may even project any words and text to the books. I hope the audience can feel the strong impact from my white ceramic books. KWG: Do you like the Chinese traditional literati lifestyle? Annie: I actually don’t know much about their lifestyle but I think it would be completely different from nowadays. It seems like it is quite relaxed and quiet. KWG: Do you think the values of the literati are suitable in nowadays and the society? Annie: From what I know about them, some were very isolated and felt hopeless about the society. They chose to run away from the society and hide somewhere focusing on their goals. And this may be applicable nowadays. KWG: What are you plans in the future? Annie: Keep creating new art work, participating in different exhibitions and seeking new opportunities.
