Interview with Nakazato Joen 1997 Okinawa Karate Kobudo World - TopicsExpress

Interview with Nakazato Joen 1997 Okinawa Karate Kobudo World Pre-Tournament August 1997 I was attending Nakazato Joen seminar when he saw I was wearing a T-shirt with the Isshin-ryū no Megami symbol on my T-shirt. Nakazato Joen founder of Shorinji-ryu was a student of Kyan Chotoku Sensei from 1937 to 1943. He called me over and through an interpreter, Uehara Kunio, explained that Tatsuo Shimabukuro was a disciple of Chotoku Kyan who invented his own ryūha (流派, Isshin-ryū). Nakazato Joen explained that Kyan Chotoku was a small guy so if fighting a taller person used a vertical punch to the face. Nakazato postions me so I am taller then him and first shows the horizontal punch and then the vertical punch explaining it was a finer point when punhing a taller guy. But Nakazato Joen said Kyan told him not to copy and use this technique meaning the verticle fist. In October, 2012, CLASSICAL FIGHTING ARTS wrote an spiteful article or hit piece (Isshin Ryu A Riddle Wrapped in An Enigma) against our style of karate and Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei, saying Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei did not study with any famous Sensei. Classical Fighting Arts, thanked Andy Sloane as a contributor for the information for this article. According to Andy Sloane and Dan Smith of Seibukan, David Chambers sent them an advance copy to review. Both claim they warned David Chamber not to print the article because it would make Isshin-ryū practitioners mad. That didn’t stop David Chamber’s from printing the hit piece, but as we can see, David Chamber’s and his staff did not do a very good job on research since this interview with Nakazato Joen with Uehara Kunio shows that Shimabuku Tatsuo did study with Kyan Chotoku. Because several Isshin-ryu practitioners questioned David Chamber’s on CFA Facebook, Classical Fighting Arts Wrote on CFA Facebook, October 7, 2012: Dear Lars, two of the main sources for this article were your teacher, Tsuyoshi Uechi, and his friend Kunio Uehara. They have seen the article, I was at a party with them last night, both are friends of mine, and they have no problem with what was published that I know of. Call them and confirm this. Because David Chamber’s told Lars Anderson to call them and confirm this, because I did not know their telephone number, I went to Okinawa and asked Uechi Tsuyoshi and Uehara Kunio, if David Chamber’s showed them the article. Both said they never saw it. Now why would David Chamber’s lie! Since Uehara Kunio translated for Nakazato Joen and knew for sure Shimabuku Tatsuo studied with Kyan Chotoku according to Nakazato Sensei, had David Chamber’s consulted with him as he claimed, he would have found out Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei did study with a famous master.
