Into the Cloud Forest One of the truly amazing things about Ecuador is its diversity. A traveler can literally design the type of experience the best suits their desires from the Galapagos, to tranquil beach towns, to numerous Andean micro-climates, to Spanish colonial cities like Quito and Cuenca, to coastal mangrove swamps, and finally a journey into deep Amazonia. This tiny nation has it all, and most Ecuadoreans are friendly and are generally helpful to Gringos. Yesterday, we visited Podocarpus National Park located outside of Loja which is situated in the Cloud Forest. The Cloud Forest is a unique eco-system created when warm moist ocean air shrouds a tropical or sub-tropical mountain region in constant fog. This mild, moist environment is teeming with flora and fauna. Since it had rained the night before our visit, we encountered washed out roads and extremely muddy trails. However, the view on the mountain ridge down into the valley covered with mist was well worth the slight discomfort. This was an incredible experience!
