Intra (peri) workout nutrition - Gaspari SIZEON Intra workout - TopicsExpress

Intra (peri) workout nutrition - Gaspari SIZEON Intra workout supplements have been around for some time. I see a large amount of bodybuilders and prep coaches putting together crazy concoctions of various amino acids, fancy named carbohydrate powders and other performance enhancing supplements (creatine, beta alanine etc) to be consumed during your or their workouts. This very recent research conducted by Spillane et al (2014) looked to compare Gaspari SIZEON with a conventional protein/carbohydrate/creatine blend. 24 healthy, trained males participated in a 4 day/week, upper/lower training program for 6 weeks. The researchers looked to assess body composition, muscle performance and markers of muscle protein synthesis. Testing of performance was done using an angled leg press and leg extension exercises. Body composition was measured using DEXA. Food diaries were used to track food intake over the 6 week study. Both Supplements contained 39g of maltodextrose, 7 grams whey protein and 4g creatine monohydrate. Results showed that there were no differences in body composition between the two groups. Further more there was also no difference in muscle performance. In fact no difference was observed between the SIZEON group or the comparable supplement. The upper/lower 4-da/week training program used in this study has been shown to be effective in 2 other studies lasting for 4 and 10 weeks. Which is encouraging for those who are natural and train with more frequency. The authors do report quite a big limitation. There was no placebo group. This group would be needed to see whether these supplements, intra workout had any effect on bodycompostion or performance. Another interesting note is that this study was funded by Gaspari yet the researcher failed to find any significance between the Gaspari supplement and something similar. The take home message to me would be to question supplement company’s fancy branding, packaging and exorbitant claims. Just because it looks fancy theres no reason it actually ‘does’ anymore than say a cheaper brand. You can save your money by simply putting something together yourself.
